Dr. Klemens Gsell was born in Nuremberg on 19 June, 1961, and grew up in the Ketteler Housing Estate. He now lives in Moorenbrunn with his wife and their three children.

He went to school in the Neue Gymnasium (Secondary School) where he also was the pupils' representative for several years. He graduated in Law, with 1st and 2nd State Examination and a PhD, at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen. After working as a lawyer for several years, he joined the Bavarian Finance Administration as an auditor and section head in the Regional Finance Office, after 2001 as judge at the Finance Court.

His political commitment dates back to the "Schüler-Union", followed by "Junge Union" and CSU. He was first elected into the City Council in 1990, up until 1996 was environmental spokesman of the CSU party group in the City Council, after that head of the CSU party group. Between October 2003 and April 2008, he was Mayor of the City of Nuremberg in charge of environmental issues. Since May 2008 he has been Mayor of the City of Nuremberg in charge of schools.

Dr. Gsell sees himself as a contact person for all citizens ,and always makes his point of view clear with precise and understandable statements. He has concerned himself much with topics relevant to the future of the city, such as future traffic concepts for individual traffic and public transport, consolidation of the budget and general urban development.

As an "environmental" mayor with great commitment and an acute sense of realism, his focus was on cleanliness, energy efficiency and climate protection, as well as on the improvement of existing green areas within the city as an active measure towards improving air quality and climate protection.

Mayor Dr. Gsell considers it a top priority in his work on school issues to maintain and improve chances for all our children. He has addressed this task for the future with great dynamism. His first focus is on improving our "Hauptschulen" (secondary modern schools) by giving them a higher profile, better infrastructure, additional specialised classes with a social education approach and by integrating these schools in a social network to help their students to achieve greater stability. Social problems which also become apparent in schools, must be addressed consistently and not euphemised. But the other school types also need optimum framework conditions. Infrastructure of schools, the city's administrative service for parents, students and also teachers, as well as the networking between various school types offered within the city need to be significantly improved.
