Every year in July and August, Luitpold Grove is the talk of the town: thousands of fans of classical music flock to its meadows and slopes for "Classic Open Air and Picnic in the Park". The park, named after Prince Regent Luitpold (1821-1912), was established in 1906 for the Bavarian State Exhibition of Trade, Craft, Industry and Art, and subsequently served as a leisure park. After 1933, the Nazis redeveloped the area as "Luitpold Arena", a parade ground which also incorporated the Hall of Honour of 1928, still in existence today, which commemorated the fallen of World War I. In the late 1950s, the Nazi structures were taken down, and Luitpold Grove once again was re-established as a leisure park.
