Regiomontanus-Sternwarte (Regiomontanus Observatory)

Observatory

Regiomontanus Observatory

For over 70 years, the observatory named after the mathematician and astronomer Johannes Regiomontanus has been situated on Rechenberg. Regiomontanus, a 15th century scholar, observed the starry sky from Nuremberg, and around 1475 calculated the "Ephemerides" tables, the basis for nautical navigation.

The Observatory is a so-called people's observatory. Its main purpose therefore is providing Astronomy education to the public. With the aid of models, films and computer simulations, astronomical and physical processes in the universe are explained. The main attractions are guided "sky tours" from the terrace in the evening. In clear weather, the Observatory's staff will show celestial bodies through various telescopes. On these occasions, visitors may also take a look through the big telescope in the Observatory's dome which is normally reserved for research purposes.
