Nuremberg, the second-largest city in Bavaria, and fourteenth largest municipality in Germany, Nuremberg, particularly since the EU eastern expansion, benefits from its central location within the European economic area. With 500,000 inhabitants, the city is the economic, services and cultural centre of northern Bavaria as well as the centre of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region with an overall number of about 2.5 million inhabitants.
The working population of about 347,000 people is employed by about 22,000 companies and institutions. The entire conurbation has a working population of about 692,000 persons.
